Alright, this has been stewing in me for a while, specifically, since the last week of September. I was never so happy for Fountain Square than I was that week. I saw a tattoo parlor move into the theatre building as well as a couple really cool spots like a Spa and a printer move into vacant places/antique shops. I was stoked. That's exactly what the area needed. So, a week later, the tattoo parlor disappears... ok... the printer people act like total dicks to me... fine... the cool little artsy shop ("Gnosis" I think) puts up a sign saying they're moving to Broadripple... and all this happened in about a week span... then winter happened. Jesus H... WTF? If somebody doesn't want to take a chance on the Square, fine, but what's with the half-assed attempts? I was hoping the new additions would translate into spring and summer attractions for all Indy, and do something to help out the area, but they didn't even try to make it through winter! It's like the local culture migrated..... NORTH! What the hell do we have to do to get (and keep) quality shops in the Square?
I was strolling through the square on this reasonably nice January day, and noticed a couple more closings to add to your list. The big AC Delco transmission building/old firehouse(??) has for sale signs. And "Jay's Moving Co" (which I thought was one of the oldest residents in the area) also has a for sale/lease sign in the window. Who the hell is gonna move all those transmissions?!!
Alright, so I took this pic of the Theatre Building last year, but I was reminded of it by the Brass Ring's sign being on the fritz (not more than 6-8 months after they've been open... they should be pissy with somebody!)
I can just hear the artsy conversations...
"Hey man, it's First Friday, wanna go to Fountain Square and check out some art?"
"Yeah, sounds cool, then maybe we can go duckpin bowling and get a drink at the Cock Lounge!"
"Yeah!"
Seriously, shops. get your signs fixed when they go out. Funny... but embarassing.
You want to take advantage of Circuit City's Biggo Going Out of Business Sale, but how do you buy electronics at a place where the staff has completely checked out and adopted the mentality they've probably wanted to for so long... not caring.
(You can't really blame them though. They're looking for new jobs... in NUVO, behind the counter, and while you're asking about your 70% off laptop cooling pad.)
They give the answer they've probably been wanting to for the last 10 years of $9/hour customer service, shit job - "Ehh, I dunno. Ask somebody else."
If you don't know exactly what you need, don't go to Circuit City, even with the going out of business sales... it's like the Thunderdome, "Two men enter looking for good deals... but there are NO returns..... rated R."
Today I visited the Best Buy next to the Castleton Square Mall. Next time you're there take the time like I did and notice your surroundings. Everybody that works there is a geek. From their homley body shape, to their wicked acne to their over-concentration of everything technological. Don't get me wrong, everyone that I have come in contact with has impressed me with their product knowledge, but you're glad that they're at Best Buy and not at your party. If the Indianapolis Library is where the geeks hang out its the Castleton Square Best Buy where they work. Pay attention next time your there and you will agree.
I often stop at Marsh to do some quick pick ups instead of going all the way out to Meijer, my preference but it was a nasty day so to Marsh we went. Shopping in the middle of the afternoon is generally a fairly peaceful time to stop and stock up on all the necessities. But when you have a toddler you never know when that peaceful time will really be. We started out strong but by about half way through she is standing in the large part of the cart stomping on the bread and grapes trying to climb her way out of the cart. By the time I got to the register I was so frustrated and dying to get the heck out of that store...so was everyone else. Side note....to you evil people that stare as we pass by with our screaming children, you were there too at one point....stop staring!!! Back to the story...
When you go to the register at Marsh they always ask "paper or plastic". Trying to do my part for the environment, I always ask for paper...don't judge I don't use canvas . The bagger, mean old grump, put an entire cart full of groceries into 4 bags. He must have been delirious about the strength of those bags, or he was pissed my kid wouldn't be quiet. We get out to the car and as I'm loading them each and every bag breaks. I'm losing my cool and then the bag with a 6-pack of yogurt explodes and rolls everywhere. I so badly wanted to march back into the store and complain, next time I will. Mean old bagger!!!
About the burned IHOP building on meridian and the construction of a CVS. The rave says GREAT new stuff. Well poop on you. It's a CVS... right across from a Walgreens. Prime real estate like that on Indy's main street should go to a more "Indy" bizz than some corprate CVS. When visitors drive on in they are greeted with commercial crap that you can get anywhere instead of a real flavor of Indy. I'll chalk that decision up to our lovely mayor.
